a. aria 1. play, set to music and sung to orchestral accompaniment, with scenery, costumes, and action
b. basso continuo 2. set of dance-inspired movements
c. cantata 3. large-scale composition for chorus, vocal soloists, and orchestra, usually set to a narrative biblical text

m. pedal point 13. bass part together with numbers (figures) specifying the chords to be played above it
n. recitative 14. polyphonic composition based on one main theme
o. sonata 15. section of a musical work that sounds fairly complete and independent, but is part of a larger composition
p. stretto 16. vocal line that imitates the rhythms and pitch fluctuations of speech
q. suite 17. instrumental composition in several movements
r. trill 18. ornament consisting of the rapid alternation of two tones that are a whole or half step apart
